You've seen the video. You've read about it. You have longed to possess this magical flying rocket device that gives Man the ability to hover atop a portable waterfall. What once was human is now part-seagull, part-porpoise, and all-awesome. After much anticipation, come this March, you my friend will finally have your chance to own a JetLev jetpack of your very own.
For those not familiar, the JetLev is the ultimate water sports device that works by blasting a 430 lbf stream of water from two nozzles attached to a backpack device. The engine floats below the user but stays attached via a 33-foot tether that doubles as a hose pumping water directly to the pack's twin streams of liquid power.
According to the manufacturer, the JetLev has been clocked at a top horizontal speed of 22 miles per hour and has the ability to run at full throttle for approximately one hour. The backpack itself weighs in at only about 30 pounds, but is able to provide a maximum thrust three times greater than the thrust-to-weight ratio of the most powerful fighter jets.
The price tag for the ability to meander freely across three axes? A mere $99,500. But six-figure bill (with tax) be damned! This is your chance to finally get out your Thunderball on! Or, if you prefer, Rocketeer! Go old school with Superman. Why not?! So many fanciful flying scenarios to choose from—have your pick. I think I'm an Iron Man man, myself.
Aside from becoming this year's must-have gift for the Russian oligarch or Saudi royal in your life, inventor Raymond Li expects many of JetLev's early purchasers to come from resorts and rental agencies. But he has grander visions for his portable water rocket being utilized for "Recherche and rescue, marine structure inspection and repair, lifesaving, firefighting and even peacekeeping."
