Shark Attacks and Irrational Fear

Susan Dornquast was bitten on the leg by a 5-foot bull shark in South Carolina the other day while standing in about 2 feet of water. It takes just one of these reports a year to refuel my shark fear, which keeps me out of the ocean. My irrational fear even extends to lakes and rivers and swimming pools at night (only at night with the pools). I can’t say how I figure a shark would get into a swimming pool, or why, but neither can I shake the fear that one might be there if it’s dark and I can’t see for sure that one is not.

Statistics reveal that I should be far more afraid of automobiles, particulate matter and bagels (for their lack of whole grains), but I drive, breathe and eat those (respectively) without much concern.

Stats to ponder as you drive to the beach this summer: Sharks attack no more than a few dozen people a year and kill just a handful around the world most years. In the United States alone, more than 40,000 people die in auto accidents every year.

Lydia Ward, a 14-year-old New Zealand bodyboarder, escaped a shark attack at Oreti Beach, Invercargill. The teenager beated the shark on the head with the bodyboard until the animal stopped biting her wetsuit. Although the shark's teeth got to the skin, Lydia Ward was not severely injured.

It is estimated that the shark was 1,5 metres long.

Stuart man, 38, identified as kite surfer killed by sharks off Stuart Beach
By Michael LaForgia
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Updated: 8:22 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010

Posted: 7:29 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010

A man was killed by sharks in a rare fatal attack this afternoon in the waters off Stuart, authorities said.

Stephen Howard Schafer, 38, of Stuart was kite surfing south of Stuart Beach about 4:15 p.m. when the sharks attacked him, according to Bureau Chief Doug Killane of Martin County Fire-Rescue and Martin County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rhonda Irons.

A lifeguard through his binoculars spotted the man floating about a quarter-mile offshore in an unguarded stretch of ocean, Irons said. The lifeguard paddled to him on a rescue board, pulled the man away from the sharks and carried him back to shore.

Rescue workers gave the man CPR before paramedics brought him to Martin Memorial Hospital, where he died.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office was investigating the death, said sheriff's Capt. Mark McKinley.

"I've been here 25 years," McKinley said. "To my knowledge, this is the first shark-related fatality we've seen."

In fact, Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie counties have all escaped fatal shark attacks until now, according to the International Shark Attack File compiled at the University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History

Schafer's friends told TCPalm.com they are shocked by his death.

"I've never heard of multiple sharks in this area surrounding someone and fatally wounding him," said the victim's childhood friend, Teague Taylor, 36. "He was the nicest person ever."

On Tuesday, the day before the fatal attack, Taylor told TCPalm.com he was surfing near where his friend was attacked and he saw several sharks.

"You always think in the back of your mind that they (sharks) are out there," he said.

Jordan Schwartz, who has known Schafer for five years, told TCPalm.com that Schafer was a very experienced kiteboard surfer.

"He was a super nice guy. Always mellow. I don't think he had any enemies," he said.

Sharks have been gathering along Palm Beach County beaches recently in their annual chase of baitfish, Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue Lt. Don May said last week when a hammerhead shark was caught off Ocean Reef Park.

Lemon, bull and hammerhead sharks often are seen off area beaches this time of year, Palm Beach County Ocean Rescue Lt. Don May said.

It was unknown whether Stuart Beach would be open Thursday.

According to the International Shark Attack File compiled at the University of Florida's Florida Museum of Natural History, Martin County had never had a fatal shark attack before. A person was killed in Indian River County in 1998.

The last shark-bite fatality in Florida was in 2005, according to the file, in Walton County in the Panhandle.

However, in 2008, Florida had the most unprovoked attacks in the United States — the total of 32 attacks was equal to the 32 reported in 2007. Surfers/windsurfers were at highest risk, with nearly 57 percent of the reported attacks in the report's compilation.

Staff writers Emily Roach and Bill DiPaolo contributed to this story.

Et une source différente de ce qui s'est passé

A 38-year-old kiteboarder has died after being attacked by several sharks off the coast of Florida, near Stuart Beach.

Stephen Howard Schafer was kitesurfing in an unguarded water zone.

A lifeguard even tried to rescue the kiteboarder, but he was severely wounded and unconscious and died in the local hospital.

Authorities have closed a few beaches as they have been spotting hundreds of dangerous sharks by the Florida coast, in the past weeks.

Schafer was an experienced kiteboarder.

The last shark-bite fatality in Florida has occurred in 2005.

Shark attacks decline in the USA and hit mainly surfers

user posted image

The number of shark attacks in the United States of America has dropped from 41 in 2008 to 28 in 2009 and more than half involved surfers, says a report issued by the International Shark Attack File at the University of Florida.

Worldwide, the numbers show a stabilizing trend, as 60 events were observed in 2008 and 61 in 2009.

Experts say it is still too early to declare a declining trend of shark attacks in the USA.

Also, because of emergency medicine only 7% of the attacks reported between 2000 and 2010 were deadly.

Five people died in 2009, against four in 2008.

Four of the five deaths occurred in South Africa with white sharks.

List of shark attacks in 2009:

USA: 28
Australia: 20
South Africa: 6
Egypt: 1
Ecuador: 1
Indonesia: 1
Mozambique: 1
New Caledonia: 1
Vietnam: 1

Quand on vois les chiffres on comprend que c'est pas dangereux les requins. Sauf si on plonge au bout du quai, quand les pêcheurs vide les poissons.
