With winds gusting to 38 mph in Kahului, the ocean off Kanaha Beach Park was suited for experienced board sailors, such as Dick Ashenfelter of Pukalani (right) cruising into shore Tuesday afternoon.
Ashenfelter, who lives part of the year in North Carolina as well, said the gusty trade winds and choppy north swell were a limiting factor for those looking for a ride.
“It’s very, very gusty,” he said. “It’s challenging conditions.”
A high pressure system northeast of the islands is expected to slide into a ridge beginning today, easing back on the wind flow, blowing 20 to 30 mph around Maui, with gusts up to 44 mph at Mahinahina in West Maui.
The strong trades were creating heavy wind chop and knocking down the swell along north shores, but a high surf advisory for east-facing shores was in effect through this afternoon.
